Para archery
Para archery is the Paralympic form of the sport, shot by archers with a physical impairment in recurve, compound and W1 divisions.
The Paralympic sport
Para archery has been part of the Paralympic Games since the first Games in 1960 and is one of the sport's founding disciplines. Archers compete in recurve and compound open divisions and in the W1 division for those with impairment in all four limbs.
Archers may shoot standing or from a wheelchair, and assistive equipment such as a release strap for an archer who cannot draw with the fingers is allowed within the classification rules. The distances and faces match the able-bodied target rounds.
Classification and equipment
A classification system groups archers by the functional effect of their impairment so that competition is fair. The recurve and compound open divisions mirror the able-bodied disciplines, while W1 has its own equipment limits, including a cap on draw weight and restrictions on sights and stabilisers for compound.
The bow itself is a standard target recurve or compound, so the sight and rest mount to the riser in exactly the same way. Any assistive device works alongside the normal accessories rather than replacing them.
The same setup questions
Because para archers shoot the same bows and the same rounds, their equipment setup raises the same compatibility questions: does this sight mount to this riser, does this rest fit, is an adapter needed.
That shared setup is the point of a single archery reference. The discipline differs, but the hardware and the fit rules are common ground.
